Mail Tribune 100, Jan 30, 1917 Monday Jan 30, 2017 at 12:01 AM Jan. 30, 1917 HIGH SCHOOL GAINS HUNDRED PUPILS IN YEAR The enrollment of pupils in the high school has increased practically 100 since this time last year, according to P. H. Daily, principal of the high school. Four hundred and forty students are now registered, as against 381 last semester and 350 last year at this time. Two new subjects have been added to the high school curriculum this semester — agricultural botany, open to all classes, and commercial law, open to juniors and seniors. Several changes have been made in the high school faculty. Miss Agins, who is now a teacher in the high school in Tonopah, Nev., has been succeeded in the Latin Department by Miss Knowels, a graduate of Bates college in Maine, and the University of California. Miss Cox of the University of Oregon has taken the place of Miss Anderson, who has gone to Spokane to teach, in the English department. Miss Brault of Reed college, Portland, has succeeded Miss Torner as the teacher of French and Spanish. Miss Brault was elected last year, but her place was held temporarily by Miss Turner as substitute. ASHLAND DEFEATS COTTAGE GROVE After defeating Medford in a return game on the local floor, the Cottage Grove basketball team went down to defeat at the hands of the Ashland Coast Artillery team last Saturday night, the score being 29-8. The artillery team has defeated the Ashland high school aggregation 34-25. Medford will meet the strong Ashland artillery team next Friday night on the local floor. The game is arousing much interest, as it will afford a means of comparison as to the relative strength of the Medford and Ashland teams. If Medford puts up a good game against the soldiers, it will mean that she has a relatively good chance against the Ashland high team. The artillery team is composed of high school stars of former seasons. They have played together for the past three years without a change of lineup and are considered one of the strongest teams in the southern part of the state.
