That's a level not reached for an entire year until 2004. The September figure was the highest ever outside of June through August, and topped 2014's 59,215 total by nearly 12 percent. The present streak of record months is the longest since 19 straight that ended in March 2008. "I feel pretty safe saying we'll finish above 700,000," airport Director Bern Case said. "Believe me, this has been a wonderful year. Rental cars are up, parking is up, the restaurant and gift shop are up. When the passenger totals are up, the whole boat floats better." Through nine months, the passenger count is 14.8 percent ahead of last year's record 664,423. "The economy is doing well enough that more people are traveling," Case said. United Express, which expanded its capacity earlier this year when it upgraded its fleet to regional jets, saw a 25.4 percent year-over-year gain last month. Alaska Air Group's Horizon unit handled more than half of the passenger traffic and saw an 8.2 percent gain. Delta Connection posted a 6.6 percent uptick, while Allegiant Air was up a quarter of 1 percent despite cutting seasonal routes to Mesa, Ariz. "They know we want the route, but they're pretty good about moving things around seasonally," Case said. "They're good at reminding us that they've been profitable for 50 quarters in a row. Someday they might get around to year-round service, but not yet." Rival Mahlon Sweet Airport in Eugene recently added Alaska service to San Jose, and Case is hoping that will help persuade the Seattle-based airline to give Medford a similar shot.
