OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK Drawing for youth turkey hunts March 31 Comment By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Mar 13, 2015 at 2:02 PM By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Mar 13, 2015 at 2:02 PM » Social News Ten young guns will have a good shot at bagging a tom turkey this spring thanks to an agreement with a local ranch that helps create hunting access and wildlife habitat. The hunts on the C2 Ranch near Lake Creek are done through a drawing by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Winners get one day of guided turkey hunting on the ranch either during the youth turkey season that runs April 11-12 or any time during the general spring season, which runs April 15-May 31. To enter, apply at the ODFW Central Point office, 1495 East Gregory Rd., or online at http://bit.ly/1gkNyjx Applications can be faxed to 541-826-8776 or emailed to [email protected]. The drawing will be held March 31, and winners will be notified April 1. Winners can be accompanied by a parent or other family member. Winners must supply their own juvenile hunting license and juvenile turkey tag and earn a hunter-education certificate. Kids ages 9 to 13 who don't have the hunter-education certificate may hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter Program by using an adult's tag, but only during the general spring season. The A&H Program gave C2 Ranch a grant to fund myriad habitat projects for big game and other wildlife. In return, the ranch owners agreed to provide guided youth deer hunts and adult archery deer hunts last fall and will offer 10 youth turkey hunts this spring. For information, call Vince Oredson at 541-826-8774. Striped bass topic for RFF meeting A Northern California man who co-wrote the first and only fly-fishing book focused solely on the California Delta will share some of his secrets on fly-fishing for the Delta's famed striped bass Wednesday with members of the Rogue FlyFishers Association. Photographer John Sherman will be the featured speaker Wednesday when the Medford-based club meets for its regular monthly meeting in Medford, at Rogue Regency, 2300 Biddle Road. A social hour begins at 6 p.m., with dinner and club business at 7 p.m. Sherman, the West Coast sales representative for Simms Fishing Products and Hatch Outdoors, will present a slide show to take viewers through the striped bass fishery there. Wednesday's meeting will be the first in which club members who do not eat dinner will be required to pay a $5 fee. For  information, see www.rogueflyfishers.org. Elk Foundation to auction tag The Rogue chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will auction off a statewide elk tag as part of its March 28 fundraising banquet in Medford. The tag is one of 11 auctioned annually through Oregon's Access and Habitat Program to raise money for big-game management and habitat programs. Bidders can participate in person, by proxy or via telephone for the tag, which allows its buyer to hunt for one elk for up to 90 days anywhere in Oregon that is open to some form of elk hunting. The chapter receives 10 percent of the auction price for its access or habitat projects. The remainder goes for elk habitat and management for the ODFW. Last year's four statewide elk tags sold for an average of $30,000. For information, call chapter President Matt Dunbar at 541-727-1154.     By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Mar 13, 2015 at 2:02 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
