Quick work with a spike strip ends Medford stolen car chase Dakota Garza Thursday Jan 12, 2017 at 2:19 PM Jan 12, 2017 at 4:58 PM Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil A Medford police officer was in the right place at the right time Wednesday afternoon, taking a break from another case to toss down spike strips just as a fleeing stolen vehicle passed by. The car, a 2009 BMW sport utility vehicle, had been stolen during a burglary Tuesday on Moon Terrace in east Medford. "The house was ransacked," Medford police Lt. Kerry Curtis said. Police spotted the vehicle at about 3 p.m. Wednesday near Medford Center, Curtis said. Officers pursued the vehicle, but the SUV eluded them, traveling east onto McAndrews Road. An officer working on another unrelated burglary case on East McAndrews Road near North Modoc Avenue got wind of the pursuit and sprang into action. The officer's name wasn't immediately available. "He was able to position himself with his spike strips, and when he saw the vehicle, he deployed the spikes," Curtis said. The strips punctured the tires on the driver's side of the vehicle, which continued onto Brookdale Avenue, then Lone Pine Road and Larue Drive, where it parked. Another officer caught up and arrested one of the vehicle's occupants while two others fled on foot. Police apprehended the other two suspects a short time later. Arrested were William Jack Cox, 34, Allen James Carnley, 30, and Dakota Breeze Garza, 23. All three were booked in the Jackson County Jail. Carnley was no longer listed in the jail Thursday, released on his own recognizance, according to court records. He was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court Thursday on a charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Cox and Garza remained in the jail Thursday afternoon, held on bails of $95,000 and $45,000, respectively. Cox was arraigned on charges of attempt to elude, first-degree burglary, first-degree theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, first-degree aggravated theft, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to court records.
