Mail-theft suspect arraigned for car theft Christopher James Swain Wednesday Feb 22, 2017 at 2:07 PM Feb 23, 2017 at 7:32 AM Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil A man was arraigned on vehicle theft charges Tuesday in Medford, and investigators are looking into mail theft charges against him, as well. Christopher James Swain, 30, of Salem was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle following his arrest Saturday. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has confirmed Swain and a woman arrested with him Saturday are suspects in a mail-theft investigation, but declined to release additional details about the case. "It's actively being investigated," said Adam Sale, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Swain and Autumn Lee Delgado, 26, of Crescent City, California, allegedly stole a wallet and checkbook out an unlocked truck in Jacksonville Thursday, Feb. 16, and a surveillance image showed Swain using a debit card from the stolen wallet the next day at a Dutch Bros. coffee stand while driving the stolen vehicle, a black 2015 Scion, police said. At about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, a Jackson County sheriff's deputy spotted the stolen Scion at a Medford gas station and arrested the pair. "Swain told me the car belonged to his passenger (Delgado)," an officer wrote in the probable cause affidavit affidavit. "But I knew this to be false." A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up evidence linking the pair to recent reports of mail theft in Jackson County, including on Ross Lane in Medford and in and around Jacksonville, Jackson County Sheriff Nathan Sickler said. The pair were lodged in the Jackson County Jail Saturday. Delgado was later released, but Swain remains there without bail on the vehicle theft charge and an out-of-state warrant.
