Not surprisingly, the Mustangs are still alive in the American Legion AAA Northwest Regional tournament, and Cheyenne’s season is over. Medford turned 14 hits into an 11-1, eight-inning win Friday morning at Powers Field to stave off elimination in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. Mustangs manager Nate Mayben was happy with but not surprised by the way his ballclub rebounded from Thursday night’s 5-4, 10-inning loss to Billings, Montana. “I expected us to be able to bounce back because we’ve been in this position before,” Mayben said. “These guys know what they’re capable of doing and they went out and did it.” Cheyenne (49-22) wasn’t shabby at the plate, recording 10 hits. But few of them came in succession and only one was for extra bases — sophomore center fielder Braxton Inniss’ one-out double in the fourth inning. Post 6 stranded 13 runners — eight of them on second or third base — while Medford left just five on. In the third, Cheyenne had two on with one out and eventually loaded the bases with two down but couldn’t get anything out of it. “The guy we faced was a top-notch junior-college pitcher who went 7-1 this year,” first-year Cheyenne manager Ty Lain said of lefty Jordan Ragan. “I was really proud of the way we grinded out our at-bats and gave ourselves opportunities by getting guys into position. “We just couldn’t come through with the big hits. We kept finding ways to get them there, we just couldn’t get the big hit to open it up for us.” Medford (35-21) didn’t have that problem, finishing with four extra-base hits. Those hits came early for the reigning Northwest Regional champs, who will square off against the tournament's only unbeaten team in Kennewick, Wash., at 11 a.m. Pacific for a chance to extend their stay. Kennewick is 3-0 and has outscored its opponents by an average of nearly 18-3. Third baseman Josh Berman set the tone by doubling off the center field fence to score Tate Cowden in the first inning. Berman scored on the first of Nick Sanderson’s four hits for a 2-1 Medford lead. Sanderson struck the game’s biggest blow with a three-run double to center with one out in the fifth. Post 6 intentionally walked Berman to load the bases and set up a potential double play. Sanderson made Cheyenne pay with a double that pushed the Medford lead to 6-1. He ended the game with an RBI single to right field that brought on the 10-run mercy rule. “The pitcher that started in this game was similar to the guy we faced (Thursday),” Sanderson said. “That guy wasn’t going to blow you away with a fastball, but he could keep you off balance with his other stuff. “Seeing that guy we did (Thursday) helped us be patient and not try to do too much against this kid.” Sanderson finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs. Cowden and Berman both had two hits. Cowden added a double while Joe Johnson rapped a triple. Ragan allowed seven hits and one earned run in six innings, with six strikeouts and two walks. Greyson Wolff pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed against one walk and four strikeouts.
