Joseph Vidmar married Helen Torok on July 29, 1944, in Cape Hahn, Calif. They have three children, Donna Jean Morris of Ashland, David Vidmar of San Diego, and Dale Vidmar of Ashland; a grandchild, Chris Morris of Nantucket, Mass.; and a great-granddaughter, Melanie Noel. They married during World War II in Cape Hahn, where Joe was stationed in the 11th Armored division of the U.S. Army. They were childhood sweethearts from Cleveland, Ohio. After Joe proposed during one of his army leaves, Helen began saving dimes for her wedding gown. Helen and her mother traveled by train from Cleveland to California for the wedding. Helen's bridesmaids were wives of Joe's army buddies, and by chance were able to rent matching gowns for the ceremony. Joe's buddies razzed him about taking his new mother-in-law on their honeymoon, but Joe and Helen were able to have a brief honeymoon in Big Bear Lake, Calif. After the wedding, Helen began work at a B-29 Bomber facility, and Joe was shipped overseas and fought in "The Battle of the Bulge," among other battles in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. After the war, Joe returned home to his bride in Cleveland, where he met his baby daughter, Donna Jean. Joe apprenticed as a carpenter and worked on residential and commercial buildings. In 1955, they bought a neighborhood grocery store called Helen's Food Market and worked together seven days a week. Each of the three children worked with Joe and Helen in the grocery store through their high school years. After selling the grocery store, Joe and Helen both went back to school and joined the prominent real estate firm Realty One. They worked together as a team and were honored as Realty One's highest awarded sales team for many years until their retirement. In 1994, they renewed their wedding vows at St. Paschal Baylon Church, where Bishop Phila, an elementary school classmate of Joe's, officiated the Mass. Joe and Helen moved to Ashland in 2001, where their son Dale works as a Southern Oregon University professor. They share lunch and camaraderie with friends at the Ashland Senior Center.
