The South Medford senior scored both goals as the U19 Southern Oregon Soccer Academy Venom topped two-time defending champion Rogue Valley Timbers 96G Red, 2-1, during the second day of the Rogue Memorial Challenge at U.S. Cellular Community Park. The 96G Red (3-1) would have the last laugh, though, beating MRU Humboldt MYST, 2-0, in its second game of the day to set up its shot at a third straight crown. The RVT squad will play AC Samoa Intensity (2-1-1) in the Cascade finals at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at U.S. Cellular Community Park’s Field 10. In the boys U17-19 final, RVT 97B Adrenaline (3-0-1) will face CRFC Rush Steelheaders of Bend (3-0-1) at 9:30 this morning at U.S. Cellular’s Field 10. The Adrenaline, a U17 squad featuring talent from Medford, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Ashland and North Bend, has only given up one goal this tournament. In its second match of the day, the Venom finished in a 1-1 tie against AC Samoa as Emily Frank scored on a Madeline Hunkele assist. The SOSA club (1-1-2) will play for third place today against MRU Humboldt MYST (1-2-1) at 12:30 at U.S. Cellular’s Field 13. Jensen, a striker who has signed with South Dakota State, netted the go-ahead goal after a gritty run in the 42nd minute versus 96G Red. Before that, she evened the match at 1-1 just seconds before halftime with a sharply angled goal from 18 yards out. The bout was a cross-town matchup of sorts, with several 96G Red players from North Medford and several Venom players from South. Jensen said she and her teammates were just looking to have some fun this weekend, but ended up walking away with a significant victory. “I went into that game expecting not a lot,” Jensen said. “I just knew I had to play and give 100 percent. They are only 30-minute halves, so I just always play my game. “I’ve been playing against (96G Red) for a long time and it’s definitely nerve-racking. They are all amazing players so it’s really hard to stay on my feet and just play. It gets pretty competitive. We kind of just wanted to have fun this tournament, and we ended up beating them, which is pretty awesome.” Toreah Foy of 96G Red capitalized on a penalty kick around the 15th minute after Faci Graham was fouled, giving the RVT club a 1-0 edge. The 96G Red squad dominated possession for much of the first half, but the Venom defense didn’t allow things to get out of hand behind the strong play of goalkeeper McKenzie Kapp. The South Medford junior submitted a sterling effort between the pipes, recording a list of saves that included a falling-to-her-knees stop midway through the second half. All the while, Jensen was lurking, preparing to pounce. The Southwest Conference player of the year and first-team Class 6A state selection led the Panthers with 10 goals this fall. Eventually, her roar would be heard. “Britt has a drive and is committed to the game,” said Venom coach Kristina Jensen, who is Brittany’s mother. “Her game was her game. She puts her head down and plays.” The go-ahead goal came on a long run where Jensen collected a through pass, maneuvered around defenders and found a way past the goalkeeper before tapping in the close-range decider. Suddenly, 96G Red found itself in need of an answer. “Our girls were a bit sluggish and slow to the ball and I think that Venom came out to play and they played hard and they have a very talented striker in Brittany Jensen,” 96G Red coach Kevin Primerano said. “Hat’s off to them.” Frank had both assists for the Venom, a squad that played together in the Southern Oregon Classic League earlier this year. The group was undefeated until the final game in that conference. Venom finished runner-up in the U19 Siskiyou final last year. “It just shows when you love something you play with heart and it’s anyone’s game,” coach Jensen said. “In soccer, it’s anyone’s game.” In 96G Red’s win on Sunday, Haylie Durant and Emily Elmore scored the goals in the second half, setting up a chance at a three-peat. RVT 96G Red beat AC Samoa Intensity, 4-1, on Saturday. “It always feels good to defend the title in your hometown,” Primerano said. “I was proud of how they rebounded from a tough loss and showed their character.” In boys U17-U19 action on Sunday, Adrenaline topped the Table Rock Soccer Club Iron Colts, 6-1, behind two goals from Henley’s Jared Delaney. Adrenaline then finished in a scoreless tie with NCU Aztecas, having already gained enough of a points edge to advance without a PK shootout. Josue Reyes, Isaac Potter and Jorge Pinon were defensive linchpins in the match. RVT 95B will play for third place against NCU Aztecas today after splitting its matches on Day 2. Carter Ehlers scored the go-ahead goal in the 40th minute on a Garrett Byrd assist as the squad beat MRU Elite, 1-0. The Rush Steelheaders went on to beat 95B in a PK shootout, with Jose Lopez, Trent Anderson and Noah Heisser netting the local goals. Chillers FC of Ashland saw Lucan Pyle and Lucas Golding score goals in a PK shootout loss to MRU Elite. In the Ashland squad’s 4-1 setback to the Steelheaders, Nicky Weinberg scored. The U17-U19 division was reduced to eight teams after SOSA Galacticos was disqualified for fighting during its match against NCU Aztecas on Saturday night. Galacticos was in the A bracket and its matches Sunday were forfeited.
