Marjorie Ann Hattan Nichols Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 21, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Marjorie Ann Hattan Nichols, 84, passed peacefully to heaven January 24, 2016 at Countryside Living in Canby, Ore. She was born March 4, 1931 to Melvin Arthur and Myrtle Amanda Mortenson Hattan in Corona, Calif. and grew up on the family farm in the Genesee Valley in Idaho. Marge attended Genesee schools and graduated from Moscow High School. She participated in the International Farm Youth Exchange to Norway in 1952. In 1954 she graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in home economics. She was a 4-H agent in Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho and then in Medford, Ore. She met her husband, Donald Keith Nichols, in Jackson County. They were married November 10, 1957. Don and Marge raised cattle, sheep, and boys at the Emigrant Lake Ranch until his death in 1988. As the boys began school, Marge started teaching home economics in Eagle Point. She attended Southern Oregon State College to complete her English degree and obtain her master’s degree in education. She continued to teach English in Eagle Point until 1989. She was involved with the Oregon Education Association and received the Oregon Literacy award in 1985. Marge was an avid reader, a Shakespeare enthusiast, and enjoyed nature’s beauty. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, deaconess, and the clerk of session. She was an Oregon Cow Belle and attended many agricultural and 4-H events. As the family chauffeur she was always driving her boys and their friends to church, 4-H, band, wrestling, and other activities. In those years, the Fourth of July fireworks were at Emigrant Lake. She hosted one of Ashland’s best potluck barbecues with hayrides, followed by homemade ice cream and cake. After Don’s death she moved to Ashland. Retired from teaching, but not one to sit idly, she actively managed ranch properties and volunteered primarily with the Oregon Small Woodlands Association (Jackson County President and State Board), the Oregon Sheep Growers, and the Southern Oregon Historical Society. In 1999 Marge moved to Canby, Ore. and then to Mount Angel Towers before spending her final years at Countryside Living in Canby. The family thanks the caregivers and staff at Countryside Living for her exceptional care. Marjorie is survived by her sons Christopher (Cindy) of Canby, James of East Wenatchee, Wash., Thomas (Karen) of Lebanon; her grandchildren, Katherine and Keith (Chris) and Anne (Thomas); her sister, Carol (Lynn) of Ogden, Utah; and her brother, Harold of Lewiston, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; her brother, Howard; and her son, George. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland, Ore. A lunch reception will follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Marge’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon 4-H Foundation, 119 Ballard Extension Hall, OSU, Corvallis, Ore. 97331.
