But then Barry, who has taught math and health at North Medford for the past five years, was offered a job he couldn’t pass up: assistant principal and athletic director at Phoenix High. The 33-year-old Medford native was approved by the Phoenix School Board last week. He’s in the process of obtaining his administrative credentials and will receive a healthy pay raise in his new job. Over at North Medford, meanwhile, Tim Sam was named that school’s athletic director on Tuesday. Sam replaces Mike Kay, who announced last week that he’s headed to Hermiston. Said Barry: "It was a tough decision to make because I’ve enjoyed my years at North Medford as both a teacher and a coach, and I was really looking forward to coaching football again. But I’ve got to look out for my family first." Advertisement Barry has also served as North Medford’s softball coach the past two years, posting an overall record of 46-13 and leading the Black Tornado to the state quarterfinals both seasons. "I know I’m going to miss coaching but I’ll still be around athletics in my new role as athletic director at Phoenix," Barry said. "I’m hoping I can still get my sports fix by hanging around the gym and the sports fields." With an enrollment of nearly 800 students, Phoenix is one of the bigger schools in the Class 3A ranks. "The community out there is growing and things are only going to get better," said Barry, a 1989 graduate of South Medford High and a 1996 graduate of Linfield College. "Phoenix has a great tradition in sports and I’m hoping we build on it." In his dual role as assistant principal and athletic director, Barry’s job duties will include handling discipline problems with students, completing teacher evaluations, scheduling the use of sports facilities and acting as a go-between between parents and coaches. "It’s going to be challenging, but also exciting," Barry said. Sam will work under new North Medford vice principal Ron Beick. Beick is expected to direct the budgeting part of North Medford athletics, while Sam will handle communication with coaches and parents. Sam will also remain in the classroom half-time. Both will keep their current coaching jobs, Beick as the head volleyball coach and Sam as the boys head basketball coach. North Medford currently has no less than a dozen coaching vacancies, but Sam said he didn’t think there was dissension in the ranks. "I think they’ve all just felt that they’re moving to better positions and higher-paying positions," said Sam, who just completed his 13th year at North. Sam said one of his first priorities will be to help coaches spend more time coaching and less time having to worry about activities such as fund- raising. Sam also wants to upgrade the North Medford team rooms.
