Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 16, 2005 Ashland claims Clearwater Classic volleyball title Prep Roundup BEND — The Ashland High volleyball team lived up to its No. 2 state ranking at the Clearwater Classic on Saturday. The Grizzlies didn’t lose a game in pool play, then dispatched Burns, West Linn and Gresham in marching to the title of the gold division. Ashland has now won 22 of 23 matches this season. "We’ve been in a little bit of a lull the past two weeks but today the girls stepped up against the best teams in the state," said Ashland coach Josh Rohlfing. "We had an incredible day." After posting a 25-15, 25-20 win over Burns — the state’s No. 1-ranked Class 3A team — Ashland roared to a 24-4 lead over Gresham in Game 1 of the semifinals. The Grizzlies beat the third-ranked Gophers 25-10, 22-25, 18-16. "Everything clicked in that first game against Gresham," said Rohlfing. "Everyone made plays." Advertisement Gresham came back to win Game 2, but in the third and decisive game, senior outside hitter Jessica Walters and junior middle Maddison Thivierge came through with a bundle of kills. "Every time we needed a big hit, one of those two girls provided it," Rohlfing said. "We were down 14-13 at one point but Jessica and Maddison kept making huge swings." Rohlfing also praised the efforts of junior outside Sarah Holgen and senior setter Lindsey Stone. Ashland needed three games to beat West Linn in the title match, 25-18, 20-25, 15-11, but Rohlfing felt more nervous playing Gresham than he did the Lions. "They (West Linn) started tipping and chipping and doing things to keep us off balance, but I never felt that we would lose that match," he said. "We were up 11-3 in the third game." North Medford, meanwhile, advanced to the semifinal round of the silver division before losing to Sheldon, 22-25, 27-25, 15-10. Earlier, North Medford beat South Eugene 25-20, 25-4. South Medford was ousted by Reynolds in the quarterfinal round of the silver division, 23-25, 27-26, 15-3. MARIST TOURNAMENT — At Eugene, Phoenix took out La Grande in pool play before dropping two matches to third-ranked North Bend at the prestigious 11-team tournament. The Pirates beat La Grande, 25-21, 25-23, 20-25 in the first pool play game, then lost to North Bend, 25-23, 25-13, 25-18. Phoenix drew North Bend in championship bracket play and was eliminated with a 25-15, 25-11 loss. Senior middle Kelsey Nelson, who missed the second game of the first match with North Bend because of an illness, teamed up with sophomore Katie Fidler to lead the Pirates at the net. Senior setter Jessica Robinson had a solid tournament initiating the Phoenix offense, while defensive backs Annie Summers, Ashley Woods and Ellie Rodriguez also performed well. Cross Country ADIDAS INVITATIONAL — At Portland, Jake Keyser churned to another lifetime best on his way to a third-place finish at the Adidas Invitational cross country meet at Fernhill Park. Brad Taylor of Oakridge blazed to a winning time of 15 minutes and 12 seconds in the prestigious race that featured 44 teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Jerohme Murray of Century High in Beaverton finished second in 15:21 and Keyser was third in 15:30. Keyser’s previous best time was 15:41 at the Danner Invitational on Oct. 1.
