It is alleged that the two young men accompanied Naomi Clifford and Erma Hawkins, 16-year-old girls, from Galice to Gold Hill, and that they registered at a Gold Hill hotel as men and wives. Powers had already been placed under arrest by the officers here, being in jail, but will be turned over to the Jackson County authorities. Dave Peterson, arrested with Powers by the officers here last Saturday, is also held here in the county jail. It is said by the officials that Peterson and the Clifford girl may soon be wed, which would probably quash the action against Peterson. SHOWERS FELL over the Rogue River Valley this morning, and the sky holds the promise of further moisture. Occasional showers is the forecast of the weather bureau. The rain did nothing but dampen the earth, and the farmers are hoping for a downpour that will soak the ground in shape for fall plowing, which will begin in the next week or 10 days. SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS occurred this morning following the sprinkle. A team belonging to S. King, living near Jacksonville, fell at Main and Central, and for a time it was feared the off horse had broken a leg and would have to be shot. It was afterward found to be only a strain. Several Fords skidded dangerously in making turns, and there was a general rush of autoists to pick up chains for wheels.
