While Mother’s Day often emphasizes biological mothers, I want to take a moment to give a shout-out to all the amazing mothers-in-law out there. While biological moms raised us and shaped us into the people we are today, mothers-in-law must take us as we are … with little choice in the matter. Of course, we’ve all heard horror stories about relationships gone wrong between a mother and her child’s spouse. And movies have sensationalized it: Remember “Hush” with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange, or “Monster-in-Law” with Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda? The latter is hilarious and finds mommy dearest changing her ways in the end, but “Hush” is terrifying. So, we ladies who have a solid, functional relationship with our husband’s mom should thank our lucky stars … I know I do. I consider myself extremely fortunate because not only do I have an amazing mom, but I also have the best mother-in-law a girl could ask for. Marggie and I always have fun when we’re together. When I’m in West Virginia or she’s in Charlotte, North Carolina, we often leave the husbands at home in favor of some girls’ time. We love looking for cool new restaurants or grand bargains while we’re shopping at our favorite boutiques. But, I also enjoy when we just sit in the kitchen, catching up or playing cards. I’ve heard friends talk about how they feel awkward hanging out with their in-laws without their spouse. But, it’s just second nature to me and I’m completely comfortable, even when Drew’s not there. On a recent solo trip to see my sister, I stopped by my in-laws on the way up and back and had a great time. Almost seven years into my marriage with Drew, Marggie continues to amaze me with her thoughtfulness. All of her little actions mean so much to me: She’ll pick out an awesome dress or accessory for me when she’s out shopping, make my favorite dinner or dessert when I’m in town, bring her delicious breakfast breads and casseroles to Charlotte, or just send me a text or give me a quick call to check up. Not to mention, she and my father-in-law Mike are unwavering in their love, support and encouragement to Drew and me. We’d have screwed up a great many things by now if it hadn’t been for their help and advice. Wishing a very happy Mother’s Day to Marggie Honaker and all the other mothers-in-law out there who are doing it right. You didn’t have to accept us as one of your family, but you did with open arms … and our lives are that much better because of you. You can reach Gaston (N.C.)
