RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU claims CCC’s No. 3 seed By SOU Sports Information Updated: Nov 05, 2022 10:05 PM A A ASHLAND — With a straight-set victory against Multnomah in the regular-season finale, the Southern Oregon volleyball team locked up the Cascade Conference’s No. 3 seed and its third 20-win season in four years on Saturday at Skagen Court. Sadie Byrd went for nine blocks and eight kills and Simone Gordon had 10 kills compared to one attacking error in the 25-19, 25-11, 28-26 decision. Outside of fighting off set point three times in the final frame, the Raiders were unchallenged in their 11th consecutive sweep of the Lions. They improved to 20-9 overall and wrapped conference play at 14-8. They’ll start the six-team CCC Tournament — hosted by regular-season champion Eastern Oregon in La Grande — against No. 6 seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at 9 a.m. Friday. The winner will play a semifinal match at 4 p.m. Friday against No. 2 seed and third-ranked Corban, and the championship is set for 3 p.m. Saturday. The Raiders won their first matchup against LCSC in three sets on Sept. 3 in Ashland. They lost the next 3-1 in Lewiston on Oct. 7. SOU stymied the Lions to the tune of a negative attacking average with 24 kills and 25 attacking errors. They won the battle at the net with 12 blocks, five of which were assisted by Savannah Schwindt. She also contributed six kills. Taylor Russell posted team-highs of 17 assists and three service aces. Karina Oliveira had 13 digs and Trinity Atuatasi had 11. Women’s Basketball SOU 75, MENLO 57: At Klamath Falls, another lockdown defensive effort gave Southern Oregon its third straight win to start the season in the Lithia-Oregon Tech Classic at Danny Miles Court. Kalei Iwami and Kami Walk dropped in 15 points apiece, Brianna Phiakhamngon scored 13 in the first half, and Clara Robbins shot 5-of-6 for 11 points to lead the Raiders. Tied with nine minutes left in the second quarter, SOU held the Oaks (1-2) to one basket the rest of the half and went into the break with a commanding 40-24 lead. Walk finished with eight rebounds. Phiakhamngon had six and three steals, and Robbins pulled down four boards to go with three steals. Emma Schmerbach was effective again off the bench, hitting all three of her field-goal attempts and scoring nine points. Kiara Brown led Menlo with 14 points. Men's Basketball WILLIAM JESSUP 93, SOU 88, OT: At Rocklin, Calif., Josh Meyer's miraculous buzzer-beater to force overtime went to waste as Southern Oregon fell to No. 6-ranked William Jessup (Calif.) at the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic. Trailing 78-75 with a few seconds left in regulation, Meyer took an inbounds pass from midcourt and dribbled into to a 30-footer that banked in as the horn sounded. The Raiders never got over the hump in OT, though, and WJU shot 4-of-5 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line the rest of the way. SOU guard Atmar Mundu scored a career-high 24 points, including 21 after halftime, and accounted for all three of the team's OT buckets. The rest of the Raiders went 0-of-6 in the period. Dominic McGarvey finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double as a Raider, and Meyer had 14 and eight. Will Graves totaled 10 points and eight boards and Brett Hollins shot 4-of-5 off the bench. Cashemin Williams' 26 points led WJU.
