Woman foils home armed robbery Two men entered the home of two woman and pulled a gun By JIM DAVIS CENTRAL POINT -- A quick-thinking elderly woman stopped a rare home-invasion robbery Tuesday evening when she darted out of her house and ran to the neighbors. The two robbers -- one with a large handgun -- fled the home apparently without stealing anything, said Central Point Police Sgt. Steve McGee. "Nobody was hurt," McGee said. "Everybody was just a little shaken up." The robbery attempt occurred in daylight about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday at a mobile home in the heavily traveled park, The Meadows, 555 Freeman Road. The woman and her elderly sister were at the house when two men knocked on the door. The men asked the women if they could come in and use the telephone, McGee said. The women allowed the men into their home. Once inside, one of the men pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The sister who owns the mobile home said that she needed to get her purse from a back bedroom, McGee said. She walked down a hallway with one of the men trailing her; but the woman opened a side door and ran into her back yard and to the neighbors. "That spooked them (the robbers)," McGee said. One of the robbers ripped the phone out of the wall as they fled the house without carrying anything. A witness saw the men running south on Freeman shortly after the attempted robbery. Police and a Medford canine unit were called to the scene but couldn't find the robbers. The women told police that the two men were complete strangers. McGee said this was a strange crime because it occurred in daylight in a busy area. "Our home invasion robberies are few and far apart, thank God," McGee said. "And then you add daylight to it and there's so much traffic in the area." The last known home-invasion robbery in Central Point occurred in the spring of 1998 on Maple Street. David McDonald Heath, 42, and Neva Lynn Honeycutt, 41, were arrested last year and convicted of that robbery this summer. In this case, the first would-be robber is described as a Hispanic in his 20s wearing a dark knit cap and wearing Levi's and possibly wearing a flannel shirt over a T-shirt. The second robber was described as being a white man in his early 20s, wearing lighter colored clothes and possibly a floppy hat. Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact the Central Point Police Department at 664-5578. Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, Oregon USA
