Two victories later, the Pirates are breathing on their own. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Barrett went the distance on the mound and went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Pirates to an 8-5 opening-game victory. In Game 2, junior Nicole Engle pitched a six-hitter as Phoenix eased to a 4-1 victory to complete the sweep and move to 5-6 in conference play and 10-5 overall. "We’ve got a young team and this is just what we needed to boost our confidence," said Phoenix coach Molly Pendergast, whose team meets league-leading Rogue River on Tuesday. "North Valley hits the ball well but pitchers did a great job." Advertisement Phoenix trailed 5-3 after 5½ innings of Game 1, but struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory. Jaclyn Unruh started the rally with a double and before the fireworks ended Barrett, Robin Singleton and Nicole Engle all hit safety. Larrisa Wiltrout and Nicole Hammers reached base on two costly North Valley errors. "That was a huge momentum swing," Pendergast said. "We turned the game completely around in that (sixth) inning." Unruh backed up Barrett at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. Engle was masterful in the nightcap as she held North Valley to six hits, struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. ILLINOIS VALLEY 12-9, HIDDEN VALLEY 1-0 — At Murphy, Illinois Valley’s Kim Hamilton was a terror on both sides of the ball, pitching a no-hitter while belting a pair of doubles and a triple. Only an error in Game 1 kept the Cougars (11-4, 9-2 Skyline) from getting the shutout. Hidden Valley walked 18 Illinois Valley batters in Game 2. Hamilton had 13 strikeouts in the nightcap and 18 on the day. ROGUE RIVER 4-4, LAKEVIEW 0-1 — At Rogue River, senior pitcher Laura Jones shut out Lakeview in the opener, then blanked the Honkers in the first three innings of the nightcap. During her 10 innings over two games, Jones (11-1) struck out 17 and allowed four hits. Lacey Scroggins went 3-for-3 and scored one run to pace the Chieftains (13-1, 11-0 Skyline) in the opener, while freshman Cass Giesbrecht added two hits. Amber Giesbrecht pitched the final four innings of Game 2 to register the victory. Amber Giesbrecht surrendered one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Rogue River took advantage of two walks and a hit batter to score what proved to be the winning run in the second inning. Jessica Lea, who singled to open the inning, gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead when Scroggins was walked with the bases loaded. Rogue River left nine runners on base in the second game. The Hornets (9-4, 8-2 Skyline) committed only two errors all day and produced 15 runs on 19 hits. Kristin Brunelle hit a two-run double in Game 2 to help Henley rally past Mazama and had four RBIs in Game 1. Savanna Milwrick added three hits in Game 2 for the Hornets.
