Suspect nabbed in west Medford shooting Macias Wednesday Jul 26, 2017 at 5:54 PM Jul 26, 2017 at 5:54 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeat A Central Point man has been formally charged after he allegedly fired a gun while a police detective was investigating a fight. Jose Manuel Macias, 26, of the 6900 block of Pinehurst Street, was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court on felony attempted assault, weapons and vehicle theft charges stemming from a shooting near Palm Street and Oakdale Avenue. At about 4 p.m. July 7, following reports of a fight in the alley north of Palm, Medford police Det. Brandon Amaya switched on his emergency lights and stopped suspects believed to have been involved in the fight.  Macias was one of two males who entered a silver Toyota Prius with California plates, later determined to be stolen. Before the Toyota fled the scene, police reportedly witnessed Macias step out of the car and fire two shots at three suspects with a black handgun. No one was injured in the shooting. The vehicle was located shortly after the shooting, and Mona Padilla allegedly admitted to police that she drove the stolen vehicle and identified Macias as the shooter, court documents say. She has not yet been charged with a crime. A grand jury indicted Macias on July 13 on charges of attempted first-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and a misdemeanor charge of recklessly endangering another person. Jackson County sheriff's deputies tracked Macias down Sunday, when he was arrested on charges of possessing heroin and methamphetamine, driving under the influence of intoxicants, felon in possession of a restricted weapon and for violating his parole on a meth-possession conviction, according to Jackson County Jail records.
