WEATHER Spotters needed for National Weather Service By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> If heavy rain and high winds pique your interest, the National Weather Service would like to recruit you to be part of its spotter reporting network. The agency will hold a free training program for severe-weather spotters from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Carnegie Library, 413 W. Main St., Medford. Anyone interested in attending can just show up. No signups are required. Meteorologist Ryan Sandler said the weather service uses reports collected from regional spotters to determine the severity of storms during the winter and summer. During the class, weather officials will explain types of Southern Oregon storms, how to use a rain gauge, and how and what to report to the agency. "We want to give people the nuts and bolts on recognizing when weather is significant," Sandler said. "It's nice for us to keep tabs on that kind of stuff." Sandler said he hopes to rekindle some of the interest and enthusiasm in becoming a spotter, which can diminish during drought conditions when there isn't much going on to report, he said. "We're more interested in making this stuff useful for the area, to report the things that happen most often here, like heavy rains and strong winds in winter-type storms," he said. Sandler estimates about 20 to 30 spotters call the agency to report findings on a regular basis. Still, officials are always looking for more, especially in smaller towns and more rural areas, such as Williams, Evans Valley and around Prospect and Butte Falls. "The more people, the better. We still want them in Medford," Sandler said. "It's especially nice if we happen to have someone who lives at high elevation if we get snow." Class attendees are asked to enter the Carnegie Library on the building's Eighth Street side and go upstairs.
