The elevation of Roxy Ann Peak is 3,571 feet on almost any map of the Bear Creek Valley you want to look at. We at Since You Asked World Headquarters have had this question before, sometimes accompanied by a request for other information on the landmark peak east of Medford. So here you go, at no extra charge. The peak was named for Roxy Ann Bowen, who was married to a John Bowen. When the couple settled at the base of the peak in the 1850s, it was far removed from the center of things, which was the bustling frontier mining town of Jacksonville. A century ago there was talk of Roxy Ann becoming a huge coal-mining operation, but the coal there was of too low a quality to make large-scale mining worthwhile. Imagine what that would have looked like. Roxy Ann is a 30-million-year old volcano. The Skycrest subdivision is built on an old landslide on its flanks. Higher up, the peak is home to Medford’s 1,740-acre Prescott Park.
