The Chieftains outlasted the Pirates 2-1 in nine innings in the opener, then completed the sweep with an 8-7 victory at Hagler-James Field. "We played pretty poor defense today," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler, whose team committed 10 errors in the twin bill. "We made some foolish errors. It was not smart baseball and it hurt us." In the extra-inning opener, Phoenix had an opportunity to win the game in the eighth. The Pirates got runners on first and second with no outs, but couldn’t score with the middle of their lineup coming up. Rogue River took advantage of Mike Miller’s sun-aided double to tally the winning run in the ninth one out later on Nate Kinman’s single. Advertisement Chieftain senior pitcher Gary Richardson outdueled Phoenix’s Chad Walker. Richardson struck out 14, walked four and allowed four hits, while Walker fanned five and walked one. "(Richardson’s) fastball was quick," said Hagler. "I didn’t like our approach at the plate. We got behind in the count because we were looking at too many pitches. In the middle part of the game (Richardson) was getting his breaking ball over and it kept us off balance." In Game 2, the Pirates squandered a 7-1 lead. Doubles by Dustin Smith and Walker accounted for the Pirates first run in the opening inning. After the Chiefs tied the game at 1-all in the top of the fourth, Phoenix exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning keyed by an RBI double by Daniel Ritchie, a two-run double by Walker and a two-run single by D.J. Ferris. Rogue River answered with five runs in its next at-bat, highlighted by Richardson’s two-run homer. Justin Castro’s RBI double tied the game in the sixth, then Castro scored the winning run in the frame when pitcher Brenton Ferguson threw the ball away at first on Richardson’s swinging bunt. Joey Parrillo sparked Rogue River with four hits, while Richardson added three hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs. For Phoenix (5-3, 1-2 Skyline), Walker went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Aaron Decker collected two hits. The double loss puts Phoenix in an early hole in the Skyline race. "We’re going to have to suck it up," said Hagler about getting back into contention. "There’s going to be a lot of close games and we’re going to have to win some of those games to have a chance." HENLEY 13-12, NORTH VALLEY 3-0 — At Klamath Falls, strong pitching and hot hitting from James Nygren boosted Henley in its sweep of North Valley. Nygren slammed a leadoff second inning home run in Game 1 and pitched a one-hit shutout in five innings in Game 2. Kelly Shannon also notched a home run in the second contest to go with his two RBIs for Henley (7-3, 4-1 Skyline). District 6 CASCADE CHRISTIAN 11-16, BUTTE FALLS 2-3 — At Butte Falls, Cascade Christian pitcher Kyle Campbell struck out 11 and didn’t issue a walk in the opener and junior center fielder Matt Hauser backed up the strong performance on the mound by going 4-for-4 and scoring two runs. Aaron Grissom, Brian Thomas and Kyle Hall each added two hits in the first game for the Challengers (3-4, 3-1 District 6). For Butte Falls, Chris Stephenson went 3-for-3 with one RBI and Trey Stephenson had two hits. In Game 2, Cascade catcher T.J. Orton had a big offensive game with four hits and four RBIs. Danny Sha also had four RBIs and collected two hits. Chris Stephenson led the Loggers with two hits and one RBI.
