Miss Antin, whose married name is Mrs. Mary Graubau, wrote the "Promised Land," one of the most important books of the present decade and her lectures have created a sensation throughout the large cities of the country. The securing of her in Medford, one of the smallest places she has visited is due to the enterprise and progressive spirit of the club women of Medford—members of the Greater Medford club, College Women's club, the Wednesday Study club and the Colony club. Some idea of the impression Mrs. Graubau has created elsewhere is shown by the following extract from the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "There is no woman who so explains the present moment in America, or so justifies the ideal of America, as Mary Antin. Apart from the racial and immigrantial value of her writing and her speaking, there are exquisite literary values, and rare personal graces. There is a quality in her books, like that of the Psalms. It is rather in the vision, in the introspection, that one finds Miss Antin. The subjective side of her writing is better than the objective side. One does not so much see things with her even though she describes with much detail, as one feels things, and she never overloads her feelings; always she carries the reader on the wave of her high emotion. In the Old World and the new, although she has the accuracy of seeing which is keen in her race, it is the seeing behind things, through things, to the heart of things, which is her particular value. She has an exquisite humor, which is not racial, and a high spirituality, which is racial. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Chief of Police Hittson and F. C. Elliott, the latter the proprietor of the Pantorium, left Sunday for a week on investigation and further development of a recent discovery of very attractive gold-bearing quartz. They believe they have found something much better than "just good."
