Lee S. Shenk of San Rafael, Calif., died early Saturday morning at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass, according to the Guide Dogs for the Blind, which is based in San Rafael. Anne L. Touloukian, 53, of Roseville, Calif., was also struck by the vehicle, but was treated and released from the hospital, according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. The pair were stopped in Grants Pass while hauling puppies to Boring, a town outside Portland, said Lana Haynes, a Grants Pass volunteer with the organization. They dropped off an 8-week-old puppy named Pence at Providence Medical Group in Central Point Friday afternoon. Shenk had made the San Rafael-to-Boring run several times with puppies in an RV, usually staying in Grants Pass at the Holiday Inn Express and typically walking to Applebee's for dinner, Haynes said. Shenk and Touloukian exercised the dogs in the parking lot at the hotel before heading over for dinner shortly after 6 p.m., Haynes said. Haynes said the Grants Pass club leader Lindsey Estabrook told her that Shenk saved Touloukian by pushing her out of the way of the pickup truck. Touloukian's foot was run over. Shenk suffered serious head trauma, according to Haynes. An Internet post from the CEO of Guide Dogs for the Blind offered a similar version of events. "What I got from Lindsey is, he saved her life," Haynes said. Estabrook stayed with Shenk and Touloukian at the hospital throughout the ordeal, until Shenk was taken off life support, according to Haynes. Guide Dogs for the Blind sent a couple of drivers down from Boring to retrieve the puppies stranded in Grants Pass. A news release from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety said that 87-year-old John Britten of Grants Pass was driving the vehicle that struck the pair, who were walking south across the Parkway.
