Ashland ekes past KU ASHLAND - With starting quarterback Cameron Voget unavailable, junior Bryan Clevenger stepped in and did the job for Ashland. The Grizzlies extended their win streak over Klamath Union to 17 straight with a 19-15 victory Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field. Clevenger filled in for starter Cameron Voget, who sat out for disciplinary reasons, and passed for more than 200 yards. "It was a hard-fought game," Ashland coach Jim Nagel said. "We needed a win to get some confidence back, particularly at home." Ashland held off the Pelicans with the help of two KU turnovers in the fourth quarter. Grizzly senior linebacker Eric Lehr forced a Brad Mejia fumble and recovered the ball near the Grizzly 35-yard line with less than five minutes to go to stymie the Pelicans as they sought the go-ahead score. Ashland drove the ball all the way to the KU 6 before Clevenger fumbled away the ball with 32 seconds remaining. Then Dillon Houshour sealed the Ashland victory with an interception on the final play of the game. "They have some speed and have some kids that can play well," said Nagel. "Their quarterback (Jeff Mortenson) did a good job for the most part." Clevenger was 9-of-14 passing for 205 yards. Clevenger's only interception was returned for a 46-yard touchdown by Jeff Pisan early in the second quarter to give Klamath a 12-6 lead. "Clevenger threw the ball effectively and ran the offense pretty well," said Nagel. Ashland opened the scoring on its second possession of the game. The Grizzlies drove 64 yards in 10 plays and scored on Jeff Broerman's 10-yard run with 4:42 left in the opening quarter. KU answered with a Mortenson 5-yard TD pass to Jeff Pisan with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter. Mejia's PAT failed and the Pels trailed, 7-6. Ashland put together a four-play, 80-yard drive capped by Tyler Haggard's 1-yard run just 39 seconds before halftime to give the Grizzlies a 13-12 lead. Klamath capitalized on a Clevenger fumble near midfield that set up Mejia's 35-yard field goal as the Pels went back in front 15-13 with 8:04 to go in the third quarter. Ashland's winning score came on an eight-play, 57-yard drive. Broerman went the final 12 yards for his second touchdown with 6:09 left in the game. Ashland gained 205 yards on the ground, with Haggard picking up 86 yards on 13 carries and Broerman rushing 13 times for 78 yards. ROSEBURG 42, CRATER 2 - At Central Point, first-half turnovers and the passing of Adam Hazel signaled the end for winless Crater against second-ranked Roseburg in the Southern Oregon Conference game. All three Crater interceptions - one returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Cody Parker - and one of its two lost fumbles came in the first half as Roseburg built a 28-0 halftime lead. Hazel completed 11 of 15 passes for 200 yards and had touchdowns of 38 and 15 yards to Joe Newton and 10 yards to Cory Whitman. Rod Cope gained 101 yards rushing and Matt Manser scored on runs of 7 and 1 yards for the Indians (4-0, 2-0 SOC). Dan Casey rushed for 127 yards on 27 carries to lead the Comets (0-4, 0-2 SOC).
