(Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell) Robber gets away after U.S. Bank heist Police with a dog was unable to pick up the man's trail minutes after the 2:30 p.m. stickup By chris conrad Mail Tribune Police are continuing the search for a man who robbed Medford's U.S. Bank branch on busy Central Avenue early Wednesday afternoon. The man entered the bank at around 2:30 p.m., produced a demand note and suggested he was armed, though no gun was seen, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. "The teller told us he indicated he was armed by pointing out a bulge near his waistline," George said. The man then left with cash stuffed in a bank bag and was last seen crossing Central Avenue toward Bank Street to the west. Within minutes after the robbery, detectives and officer D.J. Graham and police dog Tiko arrived and attempted to track the suspect. Tiko led officers down Bank Street, past several onlookers who had been shopping at the many businesses in the area, but was unable to find the man. Advertisement Witnesses inside the bank described him as being in his mid to late 30s and about 5-foot-6 with a small build. He had short, sandy brown hair and no facial hair. He was last seen wearing a light-colored baseball cap, black framed sunglasses, a forest-green long-sleeved shirt, black wristwatch, dark pants and tennis shoes. Detectives tried to lift fingerprints from the bank doors and were reviewing surveillance tapes in hopes of capturing a reliable image of the robber, George said. The heist came less than 48 hours after the Marie Callender's restaurant on Biddle Road was held up by a man armed with a handgun. Police are still searching for the suspect in that case. George did not speculate that the crimes were related, saying that detectives "would be looking in that same direction if the suspect descriptions match." The man who robbed Marie Callender's was described as white, in his mid 20s to 30s, about 5-foot-9 and weighing 180 pounds. This is Medford's third bank robbery this year, leaving the city well below last year's spike of seven bank heists. In January, the PremierWest branch on East Main Street was held up by a lone robber. Two suspects were arrested a week later.
