The band wil perform Aug. 16 at The Mobius in Ashland. The Wayword Sons features the songwriting of Benny "Burle" Galloway, known to some as the sole songwriter on the Yonder Mountain String Band's 2003CD, "Old Hands." The album made it to number five on Billboard's bluegrass chart and features musicians such as Tim O'Brien, Jerry Douglas, Sally Van Meter, Darol Angor, Casey Dreisen and Dirk Powell. Galloway brings not only his songwriting skills to The Wayword Sons project, but his talents on upright bass, guitar and vocals as well. He is accompanied by Anders Beck on resonator guitar and dobro and Robin Davis on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals. Both Beck and Davis bring the successes of the 2003 Rockygrass Festival Band Competition winner, Broke Mountain, to the Wayword Sons. Greg Andrulis rounds out the band's sound on keyboards. Andrulis has contributed to a number of rock, jam and jazz bands over the years. Most notably, he played with Brendan Bayliss and Ryan Stasik in Tashi Station, the precursur to today's jam-band giant Umphrey's McGee. The combination of musicians that is The Wayword Sons calls upon traditional bluegrass, jam bands, rock and jazz and uses the genres as a jumping-off point for experimentation to offer a sound that is acoustic, jammy, lyrical and improvisational. The sound represents the nature of bluegrass that is melodic and anecdotal and showcases the talents of the players. "Poor Boy's Delight" is a collection of original songs that was released nationwide on Aug. 8 on Hamshack Records. David Smith of KDUR Radio and the Colorado Bluegrass Society has said that The Wayword Sons are "a long time coming" and that the band members have "reached the level of musicianship that allows for their influences to meld into a beautiful background."
