Williams powers Grizzlies' ski team MOUNT HOOD MEADOWS -- Zach Williams of Ashland High finished fifth overall and the Grizzlies' boys captured fourth place at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association State Championships Thursday and Friday. Williams was runner-up in Thursday's giant slalom and finished 12th in Friday's slalom race. Other Ashland overall finishers were Ryan Slack (17th), Griffin Loop (23rd) and Andy McLaughlin (38th). Alex Hice of North Medford finished 61st in the individual standings. Bend defeated 21 other teams for the boys team championship with a two-day total of 7 minutes, 31.34 seconds. Lakeridge was second at 7:55.31. Ashland's total time was 8:04.99. Brett Holts of Bend was the overall winner at 2:24.56. Holts was victorious in Thursday's giant slalom and Friday's slalom race. Williams' two-day time was 2:35.27. In girls racing, Jenni Brunston of South Medford was the top local overall finisher at 26th. Ashland's Carrie Hald (30), Marie Bullen (34) and Rachael Karlin (37) were the only other local girls to finish both days' runs. Crater's Kara Ray finished ninth in Thursday's giant slalom but didn't receive an overall score because she failed to complete Friday's slalom runs. Bend won the girls team title with a time of 9:45.45, while Ashland finished seventh at 10:42.97. Bend's Kelsey Holmer won each day's event en route to the overall individual title with a mark of 2:57.29.
