According to an OSP press release, a 2004 Saturn sedan was traveling northbound on Redwood Highway around 9:30 a.m. when it lost control on a curve in icy conditions. The Saturn slid sideways into a path of a southbound 2005 Honda Civic, where it was struck on the passenger side. The Saturn came to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane and Honda came to rest on the highway. The front-seat passenger of the Saturn, Darlene K. Varney, 61, of Cave Junction, was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Saturn, Kaye L. Varney, 35, of Angwin, Calif., was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass for serious injuries, according to police. The rear passenger of the Saturn, Ronald L. Varney 61, of Cave Junction, was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. The driver of the Honda was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and has since been released, according to the OSP news release.
