Sheldon edges Eagle Point on final shot, 47-45 EUGENE -- Leading by two points heading into the fourth quarter, Eagle Point appeared to be in good position to steal its Class 4A boys basketball playoff game Tuesday night. But Sheldon had other plans as Matt Halinski hit the game-winning shot with three seconds left to give the Irish a 47-45 victory. Halinski's game-winning basket was set up by an Eagle Point turnover. Sheldon left the outcome up to its leader, with Halinski holding the ball and waiting for the clock to run down before taking the game-winner. Halinski finished with a team-high 18 points, while Eagle Point senior Nick Rouhier countered with 18 points and seven rebounds to pace the Eagles. Jake Kleker added nine points for Eagle Point, which struggled in the decisive final minutes. "They knocked down their shots and we didn't," said Eagle Point coach Keith Williams. Hidden Valley made just 20 of 72 field goals attempts, while Illinois Valley hit 16 of its 22 foul shots in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Justin Neville led the Cougars with 20 points, including three 3-pointers, while Brandon Henry added 14 points. Caleb Thomas paced Hidden Valley with 14 points and 16 rebounds. MARY'S 22 -- At Pendleton, Jason Simmons scored 14 points as Oakland beat St. Mary's in the first round of the Oregon boys' Class 2A high school basketball tournament. The Oakers (27-0) held the Crusaders (19-8) to just 11 points through the first three quarters, as nine of Oakland's 12 players scored. The Crusaders, who are making their first state tournament appearance since winning the 1993 state title, were led by Michael Fiddler's 10 points. ST.
