VOLUNTEERISM MacLeod given community service award Medford resident volunteers with Kiwanis Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 28, 2015 at 4:46 PM Posted Aug. 28, 2015 at 4:46 PM » Social News Local report Medford resident Jerry MacLeod has been given the Jackson County Community Service Award for his volunteer work to get more books into the hands of kids. Jackson County commissioners announced the recipient of the monthly award earlier this week. "It's a privilege for us to give these awards to community members," said County Commissioner Doug Breidenthal, who thanked MacLeod for his service on behalf of county residents. MacLeod has been an active member of the Table Rock Kiwanis service club for 25 years. Eight years ago, he launched a program to collect new and gently used books and distribute them to children. He said many people have books lying around the house that their children or grandchildren have outgrown. Donors can put books in drop boxes and the books are then distributed at an annual Christmas festival at the Central Point Library, which offers use of its conference room, MacLeod said. "We've given away 14,000 books," he said. "It gets the books back in circulation." MacLeod said he loves volunteering with Kiwanis. "It's a love of mine. The focus is on kids and trying to improve the lives of kids and the community," he said. Commissioner Colleen Roberts said getting books to kids is an important mission. Table Rock Kiwanis President Joan Isaacs, who nominated MacLeod for the award, said, "He's been an inspiration for us all."
