Voters streamed into the county elections office Monday with ballots, leading County Clerk Kathy Beckett to wonder whether the counting crew will be deluged with another batch of ballots today. "They’ve been coming in like crazy," Beckett said. She noted nearly half of the local ballots cast in the November 2000 election were turned in during the last two voting days. Beckett said she didn’t expect local voters to match the presidential election’s 77 percent turnout, but she said voter participation could "quite easily" reach 55 percent. Beckett said voter participation traditionally falls in nonpresidential elections. "We could still get to 60 or 65 percent if the ballots start rolling in," she said. Beckett reminded last-minute voters to be sure they sign the outer envelope on their ballots before dropping them at a ballot collection center. Voters must sign the envelope for the ballot to be counted. She encouraged last-minute voters in Medford to drop their ballots at the white street-side collection boxes in front of the county elections office at 1101 W. Main St. (the old Safeway building) rather than try to bring them inside the building. "It’s easier to drop them off on the street," she said. All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. today, whether by mail or hand delivery. Drop boxes are at the following locations: Ashland: branch library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Central Point: branch library, 226 E. Pine St. Eagle Point: branch library, 158 W. Main St. Gold Hill: branch library, 420 Sixth Ave. Jacksonville: branch library, 170 S. Oregon St. Medford: Jackson County Elections Department. Phoenix: branch library, 110 W. Second St. Rogue River: branch library, 211 Pine St. Talent: branch library, 105 N. I St. Drop boxes will remain open until 8 p.m. today.
