The Jackson County Sheriff's Department said the man was "severely damaging and breaking into" a parked vehicle when he was confronted by the hunters. The man quickly gathered items from the vehicle and attempted to flee on a bicycle, according to a sheriff's release. One of the hunters then fired a 12-gauge shotgun at the fleeing man, striking him with several small pellets. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Sheriff's deputies received the report of the shooting at 7:50 a.m. The sheriff's department did not release any names, and no arrests have been made. Spokeswoman Sgt. Christine Bronson declined to provide further information, saying the case is under investigation. Witnesses and others with more information in the case are encouraged to call the sheriff's department at 541-774-8333. According to Oregon law, a person is justified in using deadly physical force if they're the victim of a crime involving deadly force, find a burglar in their home or witness a felony involving deadly physical force.
