Grants Pass outduels South Medford Scoring three pins in a dual meet can make for a good night for a wrestling team. Unless, of course, that same team gives up four pins and a technical fall without posting another victory. The learning curve for a young South Medford team took a dip Thursday night as Grants Pass used an edge in back points and overall decisions to slip past the Panthers, 47-18, at South Medford High. The Cavemen won 11 of the 14 weight classes, overcoming pins by South's Evan Norris at 125 pounds, Ben Vandagrift (215) and Joe Ramirez (275) to win going away. Norris' pin came only 48 seconds into his match with Zack Steddum, while Vandagrift's pin came 39 seconds into the second period and Ramirez finished his match off with four seconds to go in the first period. "Three just wasn't enough," said first-year South Medford coach Ken Thompson. "We needed five more. "We just can't compete when we're getting pinned. You can't give up that many points and expect to win." The loss dropped South to 2-2 in Southern Oregon Conference action and 4-5 overall. "We had a chance but everything had to line up for us," said Thompson. "Grants Pass was really ready to go tonight. They just took it to us." Tyler Baker earned a technical fall for Grants Pass at 103, with the Cavemen's four pins coming from David Aschwanden (145), Trevor Knight (152), Tom Martin (160) and Andrew Ditty (189).
