RUNNING A run in the woods Orlyn Skrien captures handicap race in his first attempt JACKSONVILLE — When newcomer Orlyn Skrien finished the longer first of two loops at the 10th annual Britt Woods Firehouse Run Saturday, race observers were impressed with the margin the 70-year-old Medford resident had forged over second-place Jim Clover. Comment By Frank Silow MailTribune.com By Frank Silow Posted Jul. 17, 2011 @ 12:01 am By Frank Silow Posted Jul. 17, 2011 @ 12:01 am » Social News JACKSONVILLE — When newcomer Orlyn Skrien finished the longer first of two loops at the 10th annual Britt Woods Firehouse Run Saturday, race observers were impressed with the margin the 70-year-old Medford resident had forged over second-place Jim Clover. In cooler than usual weather conditions, Skrien never faltered on the second part of the up-and-down narrow trails of the Jacksonville Woodlands and claimed the victory on his first attempt in the unique 10K event. Skrien posted a time of 59 minutes, 10 seconds. Veteran local runner Joe Griffin, 50, of Central Point was second (1:01) and Maggie Donovan, the first woman finisher, placed third overall (1:01.23). A record 100 runners completed the race, which has a course record of 40:51 set by Bob Julian of Ashland in 2010. The Britt Woods event has a unique format modeled after the Dipsea Run in Mill Valley, Calif. The race handicaps runners by age and gender. The race begins with a staggered start near the upper parking lot of the Britt Festival grounds — young boys and girls and older men and women start 22 minutes before men in the scratch division (ages 19-30). There is about a one-minute interval between each of the 22 different classifications. The race features four major hills, with about a four-mile first loop followed by a two-mile tract to the finish. "If you're a 21-year-old, it's tough to win this race," said Doug Naversen, race director and last year's winner. "It favors the young and old. It's an equalizer." Recently deceased Ric Sayre and Suzanne Ray of Jacksonville are the only two-time winners of the race. Naversen, who didn't defend his title this year, organized the run a decade ago as a fundraiser for the Jacksonville fire department and as a way to acquaint people with the beauty of the woodlands. Naversen estimates about $1,000 is provided to Jacksonville Engine Co. No. 1 each year from the race. Naversen remembers riding horseback with his children in the area 25 years ago: "It's such a beautiful venue. I wanted to open it up to everybody. It's not for everyone, but people that do it really think they've accomplished something." For Skrien, the format and layout was to his liking. The Minnesota native began the sport in his 40s and started trail running about 10 years ago while living in Colorado. "I love trails," said Skrien. "The hills are tough but they're tough for everybody. I'm a good downhill runner and just tried to keep pace going uphill." Skrien recently moved to the Rogue Valley. He had a four-year hiatus from running, then entered this year's Pear Blossom Run. "It's inspirational," said Skrien. "Just being in the woods and having the variety, it's never boring. I figured I could be in the top 10, if not the top three. I'm just elated about winning." The top woman, Donovan, ran in the race for the first time two years ago and got lost on the course. This time the 35-year-old married mother of three was complimentary of the directional markings and having course monitors to keep runners on the correct trails. "It's hilly and the different terrain makes it more of a challenge," said Donovan. "You don't tend to train on it too often. My goal was to finish and not get lost." For Griffin, one of the race favorites going in, knowing the course was not a problem. "I helped mark the course," said Griffin, who posted his best finish in nine attempts. "I love the course. I run up here all the time. It's practically in my backyard." Clover, 69, ended up finishing sixth (1:02.36) in his sixth outing in the run. The race appeals to the Grants Pass resident because the system allows older runners to be competitive in the final standings. "My strength is the downhill," said Clover. "There's a long downhill on the first loop. I was just hanging on in the second loop and I expected some runners to catch me." Jacksonville's Sarah Hyman, 42, finished fourth (1:02). Hyman, in the race for the third time, uses parts of the course for her training runs. "There's no other race you move up in the ranks as you get older," said Hyman. "For me you run your own race. There's not the pressure of everyone starting together. It's friendly and people are supportive out there." Former Phoenix High state champion and present University of Oregon runner, Elliott Jantzer, placed 16th with a handicap time of 1:04.20. Jantzer's collegiate career has gotten off to a slow start because of injuries. The 20-year-old redshirt sophomore is recovering from a stress facture above his left foot. Jantzer, who has run this race four or five other times, looked injury free and in good form. "I like these kind of races," said Jantzer. "I like the interesting start and having the chase.
