And the Panthers responded with a 1-0 victory over Grants Pass Tuesday at Spiegelberg Stadium. "We were sliding down the slide pretty hard," said Fretz. "We went from first to fourth. We needed to shake things up and get their attention." Fretz decided to dip into the junior varsity and promote four players — Haley Hess, Mariah Winstead, Ali Kelly and Brandi King — for the conference match. "They did a great job," said Fretz. "We brought them up because they've done so well. We wanted to see something different." Advertisement Freshman midfielders Hess, Winstead and Kelly were inserted into the game about midway through each half. "We wanted them to play the ball off each other and get it to the other side of the field quickly," said Fretz. "They were very composed. They didn't panic." The fourth JV player, King, was used on the wing. South Medford (5-5-1, 4-3 SWC) scored at the 52nd minute when Kendall Gallop won the ball at the top of the box and found Dami Compher, who scored from 15 yards out. "We worked the ball up the side and crossed it in," said Fretz. "The ball came back to Kendall and threaded a pass to Dami, and she finished it." South Medford had a big edge in shots on goal, 14-2, and controlled the possession. South sweeper Rachel Nesbit and marking backs Sharon Hernandez and Andrea Green made it difficult for the Cavers. "Grants Pass really had the ball over our half hardly at all," said Fretz. "When they did, we had numbers back. That's something we've been working on is our midfielders coming back to help." NORTH MEDFORD 2, SOUTH EUGENE 0 — At Eugene, North Medford was sluggish at the start but got a lift when Baylee Hearns scored in the ninth minute of the SWC game. North Medford's Ashley Chambers dribbled through several defenders and passed to Hearns, who had a one-on-one matchup with the goalie. Early in the second half, Hearns was tackled from behind, setting up a Caitlin Engle penalty kick that gave the Black Tornado (6-3-2, 5-2 SWC) some cushion. Freshman goalie Kendra McMillen had 13 saves in her fourth shutout in as many starts. North Medford's back line of sweeper Katie Jones and Nagely Medina were integral in the shutout. ROSEBURG 3, SHELDON 2, SO — At Roseburg, Julie Piper scored in regulation and netted the final goal in a shootout to give Roseburg the SWC win. Piper chipped in the first goal on a pass from Cynthia McElmurry, then Sheldon knotted the score in the 66th minute. In overtime, Sheldon struck first, but a scramble in Sheldon's box resulted in a game-tying goal from Kate Wilton in the 88th minute. Last season's co-goalie of the year, Ali Foster, recorded six saves and made a key stop in the shootout for Roseburg (5-5-1, 4-3 SWC). Advertisement Copyright © 1997-2006 Mail Tribune, Inc.
