(Mail Tribune / Jim Craven) Return to the Speedway Danny Lasoski wins feature event in the World of Outlaws sprint series to kickoff Speedweek By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune WHITE CITY — The fastest cars on dirt left a lasting impression on the Southern Oregon Speedway Wednesday night. But it was Danny Lasoski who made the biggest impression by winning the World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event. Lasoski, who entered the race 20th in the World of Outlaws point standings, scrapped and clawed his way to the lead for good in the 17th lap of the 30-lap event. "It was definitely exciting," said Lasoski who claimed the $10,000 payout after his second feature win of the season. "I was surprised how sticky the track was and how well it held up." Jac Haudenschild finished second, Craig Dollansky was third, Paul McMahon fourth and defending points champion and current leader Donny Schatz took fifth. Advertisement The World of Outlaws was the first leg in the Southern Oregon Speedway Speedweek, which continues with qualifying for the Lon Skinner Memorial modified race on Friday and Saturday. The 100-lap main event, which pays $10,000 to the winner, will be held Sunday. Wednesday night marked the first time since 1999 that the World of Outlaws visited the Southern Oregon Speedway. It was also only the seventh race this season in which World of Outlaws competed on a 1/3-mile track. The sprint cars, which boast 410-cubic inch engines, sped around the track at speeds sometimes topping 120 miles-per-hour to the delight of the large crowd. But the speedway's high-banking oval didn't faze Lasoski, even if he is more accustomed to the half-mile distances that make up the majority of World of Outlaws races. "I don't usually race them at all," he said of the shorter track distance. "I just kept working with the car until it was free enough to get around the track smoothly." McMahon was the early leader among the other 23 racers. His advantage, however, wouldn't last as Schatz slipped by after eight laps. Nine go-rounds later, Lasoski took a lead he wouldn't relinquish in a wreck-free race that had only one yellow flag. "Usually things are pretty even the first 15 laps while everyone feels out the track," Lasoski said. "After that everybody starts to make their move. "I was fortunate enough tonight to hang on." Several racers topped the track record in qualifying. Schatz, however, had the final say, shattering the old mark by Jac Haudenschild set in 1999 by nearly eight-tenths of a second with a time of 10.930. The World of Outlaws continues its West Coast swing on the Gold Rush Tour this weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday at the Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif.
