The council is considering an ordinance approving an online system that would allow residents to apply for mandatory yard sale permits on the city’s Web site. The service could be made available as early as mid-July. Those having sales would could list specific items, which yard sale fans could then search for using specific keywords. Maps of registered sales would be available for printing. City recorder Deanna Gregory said the new system would save city staff time issuing permits and save residents a buck. Council members will likely decide to waive the $1 yard sale permit fee for residents who use the Web site, Gregory said. But they may also consider implementing a $5 fee for those who don’t. "They’ll still need a permit, Gregory said. "Yard sales are so popular in the city and there’s always been that, ‘why do we charge a dollar for yard sales?’ " Gregory said. Advertisement "We don’t make anything charging a dollar and it takes a lot of staff time to issue the permits. We just want to still make sure (by requiring permits) that people don’t have career yard sales. Nobody wants to live next door to someone who’s hosting a constant yard sale." If approved June 10, the new ordinance would take effect 30 days later but programming the Web site may take a little longer. A demonstration of the system is set for the June 10 council meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 155 S.
