Matthew J. DeYoung arrived at the Medford airport Thursday, where it was met by a military honor guard and members of his family. DeYoung, 26, of Talent, was killed Feb. 18 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. A memorial service and funeral will be held Saturday in Medford. The memorial begins at noon at Central Medford High School (formerly South Medford High School), 815 S. Oakdale Ave. The funeral service is at 3 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. Both ceremonies are open to the public. Flags across Oregon will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday in memory of DeYoung, Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered Thursday. "Sergeant DeYoung was an outstanding Marine who served his state and his country with honor and distinction," Kitzhaber said in a statement announcing his order regarding flags at public institutions. "His sacrifice for our nation will never be forgotten." DeYoung, a Phoenix High School graduate, is survived by numerous local family members, including his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
