Shady Cove officials survive recall By MEG LANDERS Mail Tribune SHADY COVE - Voters thwarted recall attempts against City Council members Fred Wendt and Allison Curtis and Mayor Tom Anderson. More than 72 percent of those voting supported keeping the current council in office in the second of two recall elections, according to Tuesday's unofficial count. "I feel real good about (the results)," said Mayor Anderson. "It's gratifying that the truth prevailed." The special mail-in ballot election was part of a campaign led by Citizens for Affordable Government to recall the entire City Council. Charges against the council included allegations that the council does not follow legal procedures, especially regarding city water issues and the spending of public funds. Council members have said that the allegations are based on incorrect assumptions, not facts. Efforts to recall council members Lois Holland and Jack Henson were unsuccessful in a special mail-in election held Dec. 18. "I'm just glad that this whole thing is over and now Shady Cove can get back to business," said Jackson County Clerk Kathy Beckett. Wendt said he always had faith in the voters. "We got a lot of good citizens in this little town," he said. "I'm glad this step is over," said Curtis. Chief petitioner Bob Hawkins said that the first recall election, which failed by more than 61 percent, gave them an inkling of what to expect. "We still feel the city's in jeopardy as long as these people are in power," he said. "We're going to continue. We're not going to quit." The election resulted in votes from 648 Shady Cove residents, a 41.27 percent turnout. Wendt received 476 votes or 73.46 percent in his favor, Curtis received 477 or 73.61 percent in her favor, and Anderson received 469 or 72.38 percent in his favor.
