Justice expert gives talk today in Medford Eduardo Barajas, a nationally recognized authority on community justice, will speak this morning at a workshop at the Smullin Center in Medford. Barajas is a correctional program specialist at the National Institute of Corrections in Washington, D.C. He has written numerous articles, including "Moving Toward Community Justice," which earned the 1997 Sam Houston University Award for outstanding contributions to scholarship in corrections. Barajas says community justice shifts the emphasis away from the offender and redirects energy toward communities and victims by involving the victim, the victim's family, police, courts, schools and members of the community. Other presenters will be parole officer Peter Gapinski and police officer Brian Ackeret, both of Madison, Wis. Gapinkski pioneered a community policing effort in a high crime neighborhood in Madison. The workshop entitled "Implementing Countywide Community Justice" is sponsored by the Jackson County Public Safety Coordinating Council, Asante Health and the Jackson County Family Addiction Community Team. The workshop is open to the public at no charge. A continental breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m., with the workshop scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon at the Smullin Center, Rogue Valley Medical Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road.
