Local teens place 7th at nat�l debate ASHLAND � A pair of recent Ashland High School graduates finished in seventh place out of 215 teams at the National Speech Tournament Friday in Portland. Dane Reinstedt and Mike McNamara had the best finish by an Oregon team in policy debate since 1982. Debating education reform, Reinstedt and McNamara competed with teams from all 50 states and United States territories. The AHS debaters lost a 2-1 quarterfinal decision to students from Chicago�s Glenbrook High School. "Dane and Mike worked so hard to get to this level during all four years of being on the team at AHS," said speech and debate coach John Tredway. "They were on top of their game all year, and we�re very proud of their achievements." Reinstedt and McNamara each received a $1,000 college scholarship and tournament trophy. Four more AHS debaters went to the national tournament, which was hosted in Oregon for the first time in its 69-year history. Amy Heidrick, Jordan Rose-Merkle, Dan Lanini and Poppy Alexander each competed, but did not advance to the elimination rounds. In April, AHS won the team title in the Oregon state 4A speech competition for the ninth time in 11 years.
