IMD Modeling will appear on the network's series "This is Life with Lisa Ling," which is set to air at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. The episode, "Faces That Sell," will focus on contemporary modeling careers and everything that comes with them. IMD president Teresa Pollman says she got connected to the show when CNN producers contacted the International Modeling & Talent Association Convention — an event for modeling and acting auditions — and expressed interest in doing a story about the industry and new models just starting out. "They had wanted to do a story on how girls get into the business, and what are the realities of it," Pollman says. Ling says viewers may be surprised by what she found. "There is a perception that the lives of models are effortless and glamourous," Ling told the Mail Tribune by email. "I learned that not to be true for the majority of young women trying to make it in the industry. Hours are long, pay can be hardly substantial, yet, young women drive industry and their faces and bodies literally sell just about everything." In January and February 2015, Ling interviewed several IMTA directors — Pollman among them. She also interviewed several models from Pollman's agency, including Alexia Chandler of Grants Pass as she prepared for an IMTA show in Los Angeles in January, and Grants Pass native Tatiyana Cotton — now a New York City resident — during New York Fashion Week in February. "They wanted to know what's the reality of the business," Pollman says. "You're like a professional athlete. You are training. You're working out. You're taking care of your skin and your hair, and learning how to walk and move in front of the camera. And you also need to learn about the business, what are the percentages that are taken out. Every country is different." Cotton, 19, says the cameras got a firsthand look at an authentic day in the life of a model, and she hopes program viewers will get a more grounded perspective of her career path. “Everybody looks at modeling as a glamorous life, but I want them to take away that it’s hard work," Cotton says. "Nothing just comes easy. If you want to make it your career, if you want to make this something you want to do for a long period of time, you have to put in the effort." Chandler, now 16 and still living in Grants Pass, says the show filmed her practicing runway walks at her home and at IMD in Medford before they all traveled to Los Angeles for the IMTA Convention — a busy experience, she says, but a positive one. "I was kind of nervous. I feel like I'm more nervous now waiting to see it," she says. Before starting IMD in the late '90s, Pollman modeled for about eight years, which helped put her through college. Even in that short time, she says, the industry has seen significant changes, including how social media has changed the way agencies find talent. "It's really changed the way people book models," Pollman says. But change or not, Pollman says she still loves the business and hopes viewers will get a chance to see a more complete picture of it Wednesday. "It can be so incredible," she says.
