LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 12 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 12, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 12, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Football is brutal Our sons played it in their growing-up years. Then we thought it was great to have them play. I have always recognized it as a brutal sport. After reading of all the concussions and the resulting damage to the brain and body and watching games where it seems to become more brutal is so very frightening. Seeing the movie “Concussion” brought this totally into focus for me. I totally agree with the letter from Mike Miles of Medford. The NFL is so powerful! These young athletes want to play, there is enormous financial gain, recognition, awards, etc. And what price do they pay! Weekly you read of another autopsy of a football athlete and confirmation of the cause of death. “Concussion” is a must-see movie. The story of Dr. Bennett Omalu, who first identified CTE, and the deceased football players and his discovery through autopsy is enlightening and frightening. There is so much information available on Dr. Omalu and his research. The introduction of football all begins with the football hype at home, in the schools, peer pressure, media and money. This is so very sad, disturbing and angering. What are we doing to our future generation? Joan Middendorff Medford Oregon football Now let me get this straight. Dakota Prucop is already a college graduate, yet he is coming to the University of Oregon for one year to quarterback the football team. Just like Vernon Adams Jr., who showed up at the university to play football for a single year after taking a math test to show that he was real college material. Obviously neither of these young men has the most remote connection to the University of Oregon — not to the student body, certainly not to the academic program (what's that?), not to anything but giving the football team one year — one semester, really — of his services. By contrast, the Stanford football team under Coach Shaw has a nearly 100 percent graduation rate — from Stanford. Football players at Stanford are not only real students, they are real Stanford students. Go Stanford! Philip J. Neujahr Ashland County area corrected Harney County, the largest county in Oregon, has been in the news a lot recently because of the events at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge and nearby town of Burns. Most of us are pleased that the confrontation there began winding down after a month. However, in an editorial from The Bulletin of Bend, published in the MT last month, the total surface area of Harney County was stated to be about 10,000 miles square, which is incorrect. It is 10,141 square miles (Oregon Geographic Names book). 10,000 miles square is 100 million square miles, or larger than the entire earth, including ups and downs in mountains and sea trenches, which is 57,280,000 miles (Rand-McNally World Atlas). The total area of Oregon is 97,981 sq mi. This information should educate many, and probably will amuse many more.
