At a news conference at Grants Pass City Hall this morning, Interim Police Chief Bill Landis said officers responded to Northwest Blossom Drive after receiving a report at 9:38 p.m. of a man "going crazy." A resident told dispatchers that the man was yelling at her and her husband, and police were informed that he had fired one shot outside of his home. They then learned that he had also fired several shots inside his house, Landis said. The SWAT team was called in at 10:22 p.m. At 11:10 p.m., police at the scene heard additional shots fired, Landis said. A couple of minutes after that, they briefly made phone contact with the man before he hung up on them. At 11:28 p.m., after the man fired more shots, officers returned fire when they spotted him outside the residence, according to the chief. He ducked back inside, and police then saw him apparently reloading his handgun, Landis said. At 11:34 p.m., more shots were fired inside the home. Officers returned fire and believed they may have hit him, the chief said. "At that time, less lethal SWAT tactics were used, as well as attempting to continue to hail the subject inside the house to come out and give himself up," Landis said The SWAT team moved up to the home, made entry through the garage, and found the man deceased in a bedroom, the chief said. He said three officers fired their weapons during the incident, but Landis did not know how many rounds had been fired. Those officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. "We certainly want to afford the officers their time away … anytime you're involved in something like this, it can be quite traumatic," Landis said. He said an autopsy will confirm whether it was the officers' gunfire that killed the man or if the fatal wound was self-inflicted. No officers suffered serious injuries, but one officer had minor wounds from climbing over a fence. The deceased man's name has not been released, but Landis said police were familiar with him. The chief said he did not yet have information on whether the man was firing directly at officers, and said the details of the incident will be investigated by Oregon State Police and the Josephine County District Attorney's Office.
