Tyner, a six-foot junior point guard, collected eight points during an 11-1 run late in the second period that allowed the Wolves (6-3) to break open a see-saw contest against the NAIA Raiders (4-6). Southern, which led 28-26 at halftime and clung to a 49-47 advantage with 6:29 to go leading up to the WOU rally, moved within 60-58 with 1:19 remaining following back-to-back three-point plays by senior guard Brad Coen. The Raiders, however, missed their final five shots. Except for Tyner, who converted nine of 18 shots, the contest was not a field goal shooting exhibition. Junior All-American forward Shea Washington led the team with 20 points and 16 rebounds, but SOU finished 15-for-49 from the floor (31 percent). Western, which also tipped the Raiders 56-55 in Ashland on Nov. 27, went 18-for-52 (35 percent). Southern held its largest lead (40-36) after Washington stole a Ryan Fiegi pass for an uncontested dunk with 9:45 to go. Junior center Jeff Williams collected 12 points and 11 boards for SOU, and Coen finished with nine points. SOU forward Travis Elam was ejected from the game with 5:38 remaining, and Wolves forward Garrett Johnson converted both free throws to give WOU the lead for good at 51-50 after eight lead changes and seven ties.
