http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend July 1, 2006 School zone speed limit law to change From wire and staff reports The law that made 20 mph the speed limit around Oregon schools even when the pupils were at home will vanish as of Saturday. In most school zones, drivers will have to slow down only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on days when school is in session, said spokesman Kevin Beckstrom of the Oregon Department of Transportation. School zones that require drivers to slow down at other times will be equipped with flashing lights or have times clearly posted. Drivers will have to slow down only when warning lights are flashing or during posted times. "This will hopefully clarify what has been a little confusing," Medford police Sgt. Phil Eastman said. In 2003, the Legislature voted to set the school-zone speed limit at 20 mph, day and night, weekday and weekend, all year long. People complained that it made little sense to slow down outside a school at 2 a.m. or on a holiday such as Christmas. Heeding complaints, legislators last year changed the law back, setting July 1 as the effective date. Medford Public Works Director Cory Crebbin said the city plans to post the 7 a.m.-to-5 p.m. times at schools. The new signs will be installed as crews have time this summer and will be in place by the time school resumes in the fall, he said.
