Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 29, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 29, 1916 MONEY IN CHERRIES DECLARES VISITOR "Rogue river valley will some day be known as a commercial cherry orchard of great repute," said Aaron Patterson, of North Yakima, Wash., who is looking over the valley this week. "It has about the right altitude and it possesses the proper climate and soil conditions to make it an ideal cherry region. "The cherry is a peculiarly profitable crop of fruit where it can be produced abundantly, free from fickle weather after March, because it matures early and therefore, does not need much irrigation. It is not much troubled by pests that aggravate the producer of other fruits and the trees need but little pruning and spraying. Hence, the crop may be produced inexpensively. The cherries of this valley are good keepers and, therefore, may be shipped to New York easily without loss." Mr. Patterson has investigated this valley on previous visits and is so pleased with the climate, as compared with that of the Yakima country, that he may conclude to locate here and engage extensively in cherry production for the eastern market. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The almond groves are in full bloom and the apricot orchards are beginning to show the beauty of their bursting buds. The almonds were in bloom Sunday, about twelve days earlier than last year. The bloom of the apricots is also nearly two weeks earlier than last season. Whether or not the temperatures of March will favor this early bloom remains to be seen. Many predict that the early budding season in the orchards of this district will be safely sustained throughout the usual bluster of March weather. The fountains in Lithia park, Ashland, were closed on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Smith kept "open house" at the central station, where a total of more than 1,200 adults and about 500 children drank during the day. Visitors were from five different states. One hundred and fifty were from Medford, 12 from Grants Pass and a number from northern California points.
