Family and friends gathered for a memorial for Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson on Monday, giving an emotional farewell to a man who put down roots in Southern Oregon with barely a penny in his pocket. "When he graduated from law school, he came to Central Point to start his own practice," remembered Kelly Andersen, a Medford lawyer who went to Brigham Young University with Richardson. "It was a very gutsy thing to do, because he was flat broke at the time." Richardson died Feb. 26 at

“Heavy fires in the mountains have filled the air with smoke, making it altogether unlovely and uncomfortable.” If you thought that was a recent letter to the editor from a beleaguered reader who likes to breathe, you’d be wrong. In fact, it’s an editorial comment from an 1872 Jacksonville newspaper. Last year brought out considerable complaints about fires and the oppressive smoke that filled our valley. For some reason, everyone seemed so surprised — but why? As o

Waive the deductible I’m happy to hear that Ashley and Josh Williams’ son, Leviathan, is fine after a shot was fired into their vehicle. However, I was distressed to hear that their insurance company said, “We’re glad your son is OK, and by the way you have a $500 deductible.” Their insurance company should step up and waive the deductible in this case. If their agent is local, shame on him/her for not doing this. I urge their insurance company to waive the deductib

Sunstone Organics is recalling its kratom products sold in the Rogue Valley and other parts of the nation due to potential contamination with salmonella bacteria. The leaves of the kratom tree, which are native to Southeast Asia, contain mind-altering compounds that can have effects similar to opioids and stimulants. Kratom is not currently illegal in the United States, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Springfield-based Sunstone Organics is voluntarily recalling two types of kr

Presidential candidate Cory Booker on Saturday urged fellow Democrats not to be distracted by vitriol directed at the party's candidates by the man whom they seek to replace. Asked during a Charleston, South Carolina, town hall meeting how best to oppose President Donald Trump without running an overly negative campaign, the New Jersey senator said Democrats need to look inward and focus on issues important to many of them, such as health care and education. "We have got to understand this is no

Marthe Cohn , an Orthodox Jew, will tell you it wasn't courage that spurred her to cross enemy lines posing as a German nurse during World War II. With blond hair and blue eyes, she was the one who could do it. "It was a mission that I was trained for, and I wanted to do the best job I could do," Cohn said. "I knew I was risking my life because I was told if I'm arrested, nobody could help me. And I asked for pills to kill myself because I was terrified of being tortured, but they never gave me

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — In a slashing speech packed with braggadocio and grievance, President Donald Trump denounced Democrats as the party of "the socialist nightmare," relitigated his crowd sizes back to the inauguration and took on "sick," ''lunatic" and "dirty" foes at every turn, earning him the unvarnished adoration of cheering conservatives Saturday. After a trying week of tumult and setbacks, Trump delivered a stemwinder that extended beyond two hours and hardly left him winded. Trum

State Sen. Jeff Golden has tapped a groundswell of support along with a firestorm of criticism after speaking out against a proposed law that would force parents to immunize their child before enrolling in public schools, but he says he's no anti-vaxxer. In the days since the Ashland Democrat joined a handful of Republican lawmakers Thursday in speaking out against House Bill 3063 in Salem, a proposed law that would no longer allow parental exemptions for vaccinations, Golden said reaction from

PORTLAND — As the annual parade of champions took place here prior to Saturday’s championship round of the wrestling state tournament, the largest ovation from those on hand in Memorial Coliseum came when the girls wrestlers were announced to the crowd. In the first year that the sport has been officially sanctioned by the Oregon School Activities Association, it was clear how much wrestling fans appreciated the long-coming decision. After that, North Medford senior Kyleigh Lopez and

PORTLAND — Playing its second Class 6A state playoff game in as many nights didn’t seem to affect North Medford’s boys basketball team, but Friday’s opponent certainly did. Fourth-seeded Jesuit took control of the second-round clash after a back-and-forth first quarter, using a game-high 24 points from senior Aiden Williams to push past North Medford for a 69-42 win in the Crusaders’ gym. The Black Tornado (16-10), which saw its season come to an end, trailed only 1

Marthe Cohn did more than just survive. Reducing her life down to a time in history is an oversimplification. She comes from a family of resistance fighters during the Nazi's occupation of France. Marthe "Hoffnung" was born in 1920 and grew up in a devout Orthodox Jewish family. In 1939 - fearing the growing danger of Germany - they moved further away from the border to Gautierr, France. But the Nazis invaded just the same. Despite the occupation, the brutality of the Nazis was mild compared to
