For the fourth year in a row, Oregon’s state park system attracted a record number of visitors. Officials estimated there were 51.7 million visits to the state's parks, historic sites, waysides and natural areas in 2016. An additional 2.7 million camper nights were recorded at the 57 sites where people can camp. Both numbers are records, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department spokesman Chris Havel said. “The upside is that we’re serving more people than ever before —

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement Wednesday, giving President Donald Trump the chance to cement conservative control of the high court. The 81-year-old Kennedy said in a statement he is stepping down after more than 30 years on the court. A Republican appointee, he has held the key vote on such high-profile issues as abortion, affirmative action, gay rights, guns, campaign finance and voting rights. You may remember the marketing phrase: “We will sell no wine before its time.” For some vintages, that line of thinking remains timeless. When it comes to vintages impaired by smoke taint, however, it’s best to move them quickly and consume the wine before the taint fully manifests itself. Northwest grape growers repeatedly have seen smoke from wildfires envelop the region in recent years, raising legitimate concerns about the effects of smoke on the finished product. Elizab

ASHLAND — Eric Hansen considers True South Solar's half-mile current move to the Railroad District to be a major milestone. The solar installation company's general manager and co-founder remembers what it was like the last time his business occupied new quarters five years ago. The combination office and warehouse on Hersey Street was nothing like the new digs — the paint was peeling, ceilings were sagging and pipes burst after a cold snap. "It felt crowded and gnarly, but it had bones," Hansen

A woman mistakenly released from the Jackson County Jail earlier this month faces felony charges alleging she deceived staff and assumed another inmate's identity when she made her two-day escape. Emily Ashton Fasel, 23, was charged with identity theft and second-degree escape alleging she pretended to be another inmate after hearing the name called for release, according to documents filed last week in Jackson County Circuit Court. On June 10, Fasel allegedly represented herself to jail staff a

SALEM — The Oregon Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a high-profile gun control initiative just over a week before a key deadline, likely stopping it from making the November ballot and handing a second win to opponents including the National Rifle Association. Earlier court arguments over the measure had been expedited, but the ruling Wednesday triggered an ironclad timeline leaving at most one day for supporters to gather more than 88,000 signatures, and setting it up to become the second

BROOKINGS — A dead bald eagle with its talons illegally removed was discovered Monday near the mouth of Southern Oregon's Winchuck River south of Brookings, and police are asking for help in identifying the culprit for prosecution under federal law. An examination of the eagle showed no visible signs of injuries that would have led to the bird's death, and Oregon State Police don't know how it died. "There was no evidence it was shot," said Sgt. Levi Harris of the OSP's Fish and Wild

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump made a startling last-minute pitch Wednesday for a far-reaching Republican immigration bill that remained on track for defeat, just days after telling House lawmakers to stop wasting time on the effort until after the November elections. Trump tweeted Wednesday: "HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON'T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE." I can’t help but continue to wonder what the landscaping plan is for Biddle Road. The power transmission poles in the median strip would be easier to ignore if the deformed and dying pines and hazardous river rock were replaced by attractive, low-growing trees and irrigated ground cover. OMAHA, Neb. — Kevin Abel and Jake Mulholland made it look easy for Oregon State. Until it wasn’t. Abel turned in the Beavers’ best start of the College World Series and the usually reliable Mulholland came on in the eighth inning with a four-run lead and retired the first five batters he faced. But Mississippi State proved to be no easy out this postseason and, suddenly, the Bulldogs were down three runs with the bases loaded and Jordan Westburg — founder of the team’s Rally Banana and hitter of

Now back to full capacity, the Jackson County Jail released nearly a quarter fewer inmates in the first five months of 2018 compared with the same period last year — but almost half of those releases were still due to overcrowding. Of those 2,399 releases, 49.3 percent were classified as forced releases becau

The isolated peak in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is named Eight Dollar, but the organizations overseeing its care don't put a price on the land. Allee Gustafson, who heads community outreach for Klamath Siskyou Wildlands Center, or KS Wild, said the organization wants people to see themselves as "stewards of the land." "These are our public lands, for everyone to enjoy," she said. This weekend, KS Wild and the U.S. Forest Service are extending an open invitation to community members
