With swinging hips and hands that slide skirts up in delight, three women sing lazy, lovely blues in Randall Theatre's "Blues in the Night," which opened Friday in Medford.  The performers blast out two sets of the 1930s classics made famous by Bessie Smith, Edgar Sampson, Ida Cox, Billie Holiday and others. There's misery, moaning and lovin’ a good man gone bad. Sultry, sexy, curvaceous women lonely for a man. Ballsy women, busting back at abuse, or loose on a bottle of beer. Kriste

“Monty Python’s Spamalot," directed by Renee Hewitt, is over the top, splendidly overacted and entirely hilarious. Whether you’re a fan of Monty Python or have never heard of the British comedic troupe, “Monty Python’s Spamalot” will have you rolling on the floor. “Spamalot,” which opened Friday at Camelot Theatre in Talent, is a rowdy remake of the Legend of King Arthur and Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail. Arthur travels his

A round of testing of Rogue River water in June found none of the toxic bacteria that prompted health alerts about a reservoir that serves the city of Salem. “At this point, we’ve had no detections in the Rogue,” said Brad Taylor, Medford Water Commission general manager. His agency will continue testing for the toxin, cyanobacteria, as the summer progresses even though early samples didn’t detect any problems. “It’s still a possibility,” he said. “That’s why we need to pay attention to it.” The

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown used her visit Wednesday morning to the Rogue Valley to call for keeping pre-existing conditions covered under government-run health insurance. The Democratic governor gave a brief press conference in a courtyard behind Ashland’s Planned Parenthood, flanked by supporters that included two local residents living with pre-existing conditions who spoke before her remarks. “I think their stories are a really important reminder about why it’s important to fight for health care

Public pretense, inner darkness and love meet up in “Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical,” playing at the Randall Theatre in Medford. Loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” the 1990 musical adaptation is a pop rock melodrama of virtue and evil with a goodly measure of extravagant Gothic horror. Dr. Henry Jekyll, played by Robin Downward, is physician to the violent ward at a London insane asylum, Jekyll’s fat

Whispers, gossip, hearsay and hushed voices echo in the prologue to “Henry IV, Part Two” as Rumor rises out of the mist. Alejandra Escalante as Rumor tells the tale of Henry IV, the backstory if you will, of this Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of “Henry IV, Part Two.” In "Part One," Prince Hal was in the prime of his youth, exuberant and carefree, but the nation is divided and his father, King Henry IV, is troubled for his people. "Part One" ends in a cliff ha

“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” which opened last weekend at the Camelot Theatre, is an old-fashioned Western morality play with consummate good, supreme evil and lots of ambiguity in between. The story is best known from the 1962 film starring John Wayne and James Stewart, Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance and Vera Miles as Hallie Jackson. The play, adapted by Jethro Compton and first performed in London in 2014, had some significant differences that elevated it from a simple West

Camelot Theatre is aiming for the fences — or perhaps the rooftops — this holiday season with its first production of the classic musical "Mary Poppins." "You can only see 'White Christmas' so many times," says Dann Hauser, Camelot Theatre's executive director. "We sent out about 10,000 emails and asked our patrons what they wanted to see. Camelot is known for its musicals, especially during the holidays. It's a better show for us if we get the whole family together." The magic beg

As a child, Olivia Harrison enjoyed watching John Wayne westerns with her father. The actor's Oscar-winning performance in “True Grit” is one of her favorites. She was fascinated with the wild West as portrayed in the movies. “I loved the atmosphere,” she says. “Dirty, gritty sets peopled with actors in elaborate costumes.” It was fun to watch the gunslingers and their fancy gun play, and then there were the classic stories steeped in themes of good vers

Charismatic Tony — a former professional tennis player — has grown accustomed to the lavish lifestyle made possible by his wife and heiress, Margot. When he fears she's having an affair, he'd rather plot her demise than be victim to her waning affections. Even the best laid plans backfire. When Tony's meticulous scheme goes awry in this classic thriller by playwright Frederick Knott, he must improvise an equally sinister contrivance and stay one step ahead of the police. So begins

Growing up in the Roberts household, fishing book-ended many days of our outdoor adventures. Dawn and dusk, with rod in hand, we’d troop down to the shoreline by the river or ease ourselves into the old aluminum boat at the lake. For my father, fishing was as much about simply being in the outdoors as it was about catching trout. His tackle box always sported the newest and brightest lures, but fancy gear aside, a successful day on the water was guaranteed with the first cast. My father’s gentle

The Randall Theatre’s “Broadway or Bust” is a lively and informative tribute to the Broadway musicals of the tumultuous 1960s. Director Kathy Wing managed to narrow down songs from the more than 150 musicals that debuted that decade to 16 favorites that will have audience members smiling nostalgically. The 1960s were a time of seismic changes in American culture. Children of the post-war baby boom questioned their parents’ values. The assassinations John F. Kennedy, M

SALEM — Republicans, by the thinnest of margins, managed to grab one seat from the Democrats in the Oregon Senate, while the ratio remained the same in the state House. Results from the 2016 general election enable Democrats to still dominate the Legislature, though they are one seat short of a supermajority in each chamber that would have enabled them to pass laws more easily. The Democrats' one-seat loss in the Senate, which also cost the party its supermajority there, was of the seat p

There was no new growth on the Klamathon fire overnight, with the blaze staying put at 36,500 acres, according to an interagency news release. Officials said the fire, which has been burning on the Oregon-California border since Thursday afternoon, is now 60 percent contained, up 5 percent more from Tuesday evening's containment estimate of 55 percent.
