Dear Librarian, I really enjoy reading books that have been made into movies, so I can watch the movie afterwards. Some I have enjoyed are “The Mountain Between Us” by Charles Martin (I liked the adventure aspect of this story), “The Light Between Oceans” by M. L. Stedman, and “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern (not yet a movie). I liked the fantasy and whimsy of “The Night Circus,” but the ending was a little disappointing and anticlimactic. Though it’s not a movie, I also really enjoyed th

Fresh Oregon Dungeness crab will be off the table for Christmas, and possibly even New Year's Day, as bad weather has joined concerns about toxin levels to cancel some traditional holiday dinner plans. State fish biologists are awaiting test results on crabs sampled Wednesday outside of four Oregon ports to determine whether domoic acid levels that have dogged Pacific crab this fall are waning. That sampling was planned for last week, but 30-foot seas triggered port closings along the Oregon Coa

EAGLE POINT — As timbers are being hewn nearby to rebuild the historic Butte Creek Mill, supporters are asking the Eagle Point City Council for $100,000 toward a fundraising goal of $2.5 million. Nearly $1.2 million has been raised so far toward rebuilding the mill, which burned in a Christmas Day fire in 2015. Built in 1872, it had been the last water-powered grist mill still commercially operating this side of the Mississippi before its demise. “Our timber framers are hewing timbers and will b

By Robert Galvin Mail Tribune Ellen Ripley is one of the most-famous, most-heroic, and downright most bad-ass characters in science fiction history — fighting off (and mostly defeating) the hang-toothed, chest-bursting, acid-dripping killing machines in the “Alien” films … before sacrificing herself into a pit of fire, being reincarnated through strands of DNA and ultimately becoming part-alien herself. And, in the beginning, Ellen Ripley was a man. Ridley Scott, director of the first “Alien” in
